Frank / Architects, founded in 1993, now has two offices; our main location in Oakland, where the primary work is on commercial urban projects in the East Bay, and a satellite space, which serves as a project office for the custom house work in the Sea Ranch. In addition to our work in the greater Bay Area, Frank / Architects has done projects throughout California, in the Czech Republic, and on the East Coast, alone or in cooperation with other architectural firms. The office is completely computerized, including the principal; no hand drafting allowed. On all our projects we carefully think through the building systems, especially the structure of the building. We take pleasure in addressing the technical challenges posed by older structures, and in developing effective ways to help them better serve the evolving needs of our clients. We were one of the first users of SIPs (structural insulated panels) in sustainable residential design. We consider the site and cultural context of each project and maintain its relationship to the landscape or the urban fabric. “The form evolves from what things are and what they do,” as Joe Esherick once said. We do make our projects well designed, yet practical, trying to minimize the sticker shock so many clients encounter these days.
